Getting your guard card in California is a straightforward process regulated by the Bureau of Security Investigative Services (BSIS). Here's everything you need to know.


Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements


You must be at least 18 years old, have a valid government-issued ID, and be legally authorized to work in the United States. You cannot have any felony convictions.


Step 2: Complete the Required Training


California requires 40 hours of training total — 8 hours of Power to Arrest training before you can apply, and 32 additional hours within 6 months of being hired.

Step 3: Get Fingerprinted (Live Scan)


You'll need to submit fingerprints through a Live Scan provider. This triggers a background check through the DOJ and FBI.

Step 4: Submit Your Application


Apply online through the BSIS website at bsis.dca.ca.gov. The application fee is $50.


Step 5: Receive Your Guard Card
